“The real loneliness is living among all these kind people who only ask one to pretend!”
― Edith Wharton, Age of Innocence
Edith Wharton won the Pulitzer Prize for this novel in 1921, and she was the first woman to do it! The Age of Innocence is, among other things, a book about what it costs to be a woman in a world run by men who have decided they are being very kind to you. This is one of the great American novels not because of what happens in it, but because of what doesn't.
