“I profess not to know how women's hearts are wooed and won. To me they have always been matters of riddle and admiration.”
― Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is a place that wants to stay dreamy and undisturbed, and Ichabod Crane is very much an intrusion. There's also a question the story leaves open that I won't spoil here. But pay attention to it. Irving is doing something quietly clever right up until the last page.
